Mission Note

Sam Bandela is following God’s call to reach the most neglected of his home country with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He and his wife, Latha, are among the approximately 150 CBF Global Missions field personnel whose salaries, benefits and ministry and operating expenses are covered by your gifts to the CBF Offering for Global Missions. Recently, Sam, along with Indian church planters he helped to train, has seen dozens of villagers profess faith in Christ. Sam and CBF partners also have provided clean water to the mountain communities. Lives have been transformed by clean water and a message of love. A major concern for Bandela and his partners is building self-sustaining work. Often, U.S. pastors will participate by teaching in the church planting seminars and training in Hyderabad. The program, established by Bandela with gifts from Fellowship churches, is now completely led by indigenous Christian leaders. “If India is to be reached in our time and generation, it has to be reached by the Indian nationals…” Sam said. “Christians in America need to join hands together, and say ‘we are with you and we’ll join with you and pray with you.’” Please respond to Sam’s challenge to embrace the world with your prayers and gifts. So far, CHBC members have given $1,737.30 toward our $6,150 goal for the Offering for Global Missions. The national goal is $6,150,000.

FROM THE ASSOCIATE PASTOR TO CHILDREN SEARCH TEAM

Please pass this along to persons you may know who may be interested in this position. Crescent Hill Baptist Church, Louisville, Kentucky, seeks a full time Associate Pastor to Children who will plan, coordinate, and implement a full fledged ministry to children and their families. This person will also direct the church’s afterschool and summer childcare programs. This position requires excellent leadership, organizational and communication skills. Must have at least two year’s experience working with children, meet KY state requirements for childcare director, M.Div. preferred. RELIEF DRIVERS NEEDED FOR THE KAREN

There is a need for relief drivers who would use their own personal car to pick up a Karen family to bring them to church and back home. Someone is needed the 2nd, 3rd and possibly the 4th Sundays of November to fill in for a driver who will be out of town. We need someone to pick them up and drop them off one or more of those Sundays. Drivers will be provided with written directions as how to get to their home or are welcome to ride one Sunday in advance. Any one wanting more information can contact Jerry Smith (426-9794) or David Cook (454-7698). We would like to use the opportunity to build a list of relief drivers.

CENTENNIAL ITEMS AVAILABLE

Celebrate the Centennial with a mug, T-shirt, sweatshirt or tote bag bearing one of our centennial logos. Beginning today these items will be available for purchase in the Birchwood lobby. The shirts and tote bags were purchased from a company committed to improving wages and labor conditions for production workers in Latin America by expanding the market in the United States for basic goods produced by fair trade production groups in Latin America. We also have prints of the Dwight Cobb drawing of the church that will be available unmatted or matted. And don’t forget the Centennial Cookbook, which will be available early December!

MEMORIAL GARDEN UPDATE

The Building and Grounds Team is excited about the continuing landscape renovation project, culminating in the Memorial Garden. In order to ensure the garden’s success, we first are addressing drainage issues along the Birchwood side of the Burhans Building. In the meantime, we are continuing to work to fund the project. Donations toward the purchase of plant material and installation costs are welcome. Also, brick sales will continue through the Centennial celebration in May to give those attending the celebration an opportunity to be a part of the garden. Forms for the purchase of bricks are available in the Birchwood Lobby and the church office. If you would like further information on how you can contribute to the Garden, or if you have questions regarding purchasing bricks and/or what you want inscribed on your brick, please feel free to contact Jo Forest (893-6488, jad@gdm.com), or Janet Miller (899-3378, jlm1219@aol.com).

MAKING THE KAREN KONNECTION

Many of you are hungry for resources to know more about the Karen people as you welcome them into our congregation. We recommend as a starting point the new website established by our missionary partners Duane and Marcia Binkley at www.karenkonnection.org. Topics include
* Are the Karen some of the immigrants we hear about in the news?
* How do the Karen get to America?
* Where in the U.S. are the Karen going?
* Why are the Karen refugees?
* Cultural tips and trends
* What happens when the Karen arrive in the U.S.?
* What can I or my church do to assist the Karen?
* What is the Baptist connection with the Karen
* Who are the Karen?
As additional resources are developed, we will make them available to the church.

ELEMENTARY MISSIONS NEEDS BOOKS

The children in our elementary missions group are collecting new or gently used books and toys for children and youth in poverty situations. Once collected during February and March, we will take some of them to children in our community and send others to a "Stories on Wheels" project in one of the poorest counties in the US. We have been learning about the CBF home missionaries who began the project and are excited about helping them with their dream. WE ASK YOU TO HELP US in our project by donating these items. There will be a container in the hallway near the office for your offerings. Thank you. (It is nice to have books related to a variety of ethnic groups.)

MUSIC

................................................................................Louie Bailey, Music Minister and organist

"LIFT UP YOUR VOICE AND SING ALLELUIA!"

As we get ready to celebrate our 100th anniversary, this year's theme for the Music Ministry is drawn from the beautiful hymn of praise, All Creatures of Our God and King, based on a poem by St. Francis of Assisi, written around 1425. The hymn uses metaphors drawn from nature to demonstrate how God is praised. Our faith is a singing faith. We have so much to sing about since God has given us the gift of life and the gift of Jesus Christ.
You and your family are invited and encouraged to be a part of the Crescent Hill Music Ministry. Find your place in the Crescent Hill Music Ministry this year. For further information, please contact Louie Bailey, Minister of Music/Organist.

Upland Holistic Development Project Update

For over 10 years, the Upland Holistic Development Project (UHDP) has provided an appropriate Christian response for rural development among hilltribe people in Southeast Asia’s Golden Triangle. The work of the UHDP and CBF Field Personnel Rick and Ellen Burnette with the Paluang and other hilltribes in northern Thailand was CHBC’s premiere CBF partnership.

Over the years, the work of the UHDP has grown from its emphasis on sustainable agriculture and clean water to include many significant initiatives. Read on to learn more about the work that your budget and offering gifts support.

Women's and Gender Issues

As in many cultures, the relegation of gender roles in hilltribe society can limit the participation of women in certain capacities, such as in direct forms of community leadership. UHDP is partnering with upland communities to broaden gender understanding and to strengthen the participation of women in all levels of society.

Citizenship and Related Rights

In the UHDP focus area of 18 hilltribe communities, an estimated 2/3 of the residents still lack Thai citizenship. Large numbers of undocumented persons are also found throughout northern Thailand. UHDP is assisting affected hilltribe partners to obtain proper registration as well as to meet eligibility requirements related to requesting legal residence, citizenship and related rights. UHDP also supports the efforts of the Palaung and Kachin Tribal Networks.

Micro-enterprise / Micro-finance

With limited farmland and without many other viable options for employment, upland people must maximize income opportunities from backyard agriculture and other cottage industry. Micro-finance, managed by community members, can provide a needed financial boost towards establishing small family enterprises such as village stores and markets, livestock feed cooperatives and other backyard sources of supplemental income.

So far, CHBC members have given $1445.25 toward our $6150 goal for the Offering for Global Missions.

MARTHA'S ORPHANS AND INFANTS

Martha Shaw, who with her husband Rick is a CBF missionary in Albania and Macedonia, has a ministry with orphans and indigent children. We have the opportunity to participate in that ministry by providing funds to purchase food and school supplies for these children (checks should be made to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship with the project name and number in the memo line (Martha's Orphans and Indigents #80363) and put it in the labeled box in the office.

FRIENDSHIP INTERNATIONAL - CHILDCARE

Friendship International meets at Walnut Street Baptist Church every Wednesday morning from 9:00 to 12:20. Each week about one hundred and twenty ladies from about twenty-five countries meet to study English, citizenship, Bible, and piano and learn new crafts. They bring about thirty or forty children with them that we care for while their mothers are studying.

We have three nursery rooms: bed babies, toddlers, and three to five year olds. We are desperately in need of help. We need three additional helpers, one for each of the age groups. The volunteer should be a church member who has had some experience working with children and should be recommended by someone in our church who knows him or her. We do also have limited funds to pay minimum wages to one or two people. If you are interested, please contact Mary Neal Clarke, Sharon White, or Kathy Springs.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY NEEDS your HELP!

The Louisville affiliate of Habitat for Humanity is looking for volunteers who are experienced in money management skills and are willing to tutor future homeowners. Habitat for Humanity also needs a person willing to produce a monthly newsletter for owners of Habitat houses. If interested in either of these positions, please contact maryluke@habitatlky.org or 583-6599 ext. 25. YOU can make a difference!

Kenya Reflection

I have never experienced anything else like it: the Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya. The land was beautiful. The sunrise and sunset (which I actually saw every day during my visit) were absolutely breathtaking, enough to bring tears to your eyes. The animals that we saw would strike fear and awe into your heart and the people: they could inflame passion in your soul. The Masai people are some of the most amazing and interesting cultures in the world. Their diet consists primarily of water and cow's blood and they live in houses that have ceilings no higher than four feet. The idea that people can survive in that environment is stunning to me: shows what I know. These people, like all the others I met in Kenya, look at life so positively for having so little. They take nothing for granted, and yet, greed has not left them to their own devices completely. The camp we stayed at during our visit, the Sarova Mara campground, is owned by five Masai who are now very rich because the entire profit that comes out of that business goes to them. None of it is shared with the extremely poor Masai villagers. How can this be? How could such a disease as this exist everywhere in the world? How could it infect every culture, every country-every single mind on the planet? Perhaps not every mind. If given the opportunity, would these poor Masai villagers take from others to gain for themselves? Or would they find better ways to get ahead? Well, what if Americans served as their example? ... Uh-oh.

CHURCH SNOW POLICY: A REMINDER

The day most affected is Wednesday. If public schools are canceled on Wednesdays, there will be no evening activities at church. On other week days when it snows and a meeting is scheduled, it is at the discretion of the appropriate leaders and the staff to cancel the event. When public schools are canceled, our Afterschool program will NOT be open due to inadequate registration numbers. On Sundays we tend to proceed with services unless weather conditions are extremely bad. The answering machine will be updated to reflect changes in scheduling. As always, however, we ask you to exercise your best judgment about getting out. If services are canceled on Sunday morning, we shall seek to announce this on radio and television.
