CHBC Instrumental Program Alumni Project
We are in the process of celebrating the gifts of instrumental musicians with which God has graced Crescent Hill over the past 90 years by compiling a directory of those musicians who've shared their talents with the congregation over this era. Please check out this list (see link) and send any additions or corrections to John Arnett or . Thank you.
SINGERS INVITED
Do you enjoy singing? Would you like to use your talent to praise God and help others praise God? Any singers interested in being a part of the Chancel Choir are invited to come to rehearsal on Wednesdays 7:15 in the Choir Room. No audition is required, just the desire to share your gifts with others. We will be singing a wide variety of music, in many different styles. We have some exciting projects planned for the Fall. Please contact Louie Bailey if you have questions.
CRESCENT HILL ORCHESTRA
The Crescent Hill Orchestra has begun rehearsals on Sundays at 9:00 AM in the Choir Room. Anyone who plays a band or orchestral instrument is invited to attend. Doug Holm is conducting the group again this year. Please contact Louie Bailey for further information.
PRIME TIME SINGERS WANTED
The Prime Time Singers, a group made up of those 50 and above who love to sing and share their talents, rehearse each Monday at 3:00 PM in the Choir Room. We present programs that we put together ourselves, based on favorite songs and memories. Many of the songs we sing are the good ol' songs and gospel songs, so if this appeals to you, we would love to have you sing with us. Contact Louie Bailey if you have questions.
PRIME TIME RINGERS BEGIN NEW SEASON
The Prime Time Ringers have begun weekly rehearsals each Monday at 2:00 in the Multipurpose Room. Any person interested in ringing please see Louie Bailey.
JUBILATION RINGERS BEGIN NEW SEASON
The Jubilation Ringers , our adult handbell choir, meets each Sunday at 6:00 PM in the Multipurpose Room. Although most positions are filled, if you are interested in ringing or being a substitute, please contact June Bailey, 228-3253.
Creating a Worship Service
From time to time, I am asked how we go about planning worship at Crescent Hill. Our church has a strong history of the importance of worship, and much thought and planning goes into the preparation each week. We start with the basic premise that worship is offering our whole selves to God, not only on Sunday morning, but every day of the week. We also want to offer God the very best we have, a sacrifice of love and excellence. Our effort is to please God, who, as the great theologian Kierkegaard has said, is the audience, with the worship leaders as prompters and the congregation as the participants.
Since last Fall, the entire ministerial staff (except for Karen, whose full-time job prohibits her from meeting with us) has been planning the worship services each Sunday. Beginning with the scripture and sermon theme for the day, Ron, Bill, Anita, Jeff and I spend time each week putting together the service, discussing and choosing all of the hymns, prayers, complementary scriptures, and other elements of worship in order to come up with a cohesive service (basically, everything is "up for grabs" each week). Each minister has input into every service. We feel that each minister has the "ears" of different groups in the church, and therefore can speak to the needs as s/he sees them. We try to mix the familiar with the new, and find ways to present the gospel in fresh and traditional ways. We are committed to keeping a sense of dignity with warmth, but with "aha" experiences along the way, which may come through in the words of a prayer, scripture, silence, musical selections, drama, interpretive movement, and the spoken word. At the request of the Worship Committee, we try to include at least one passage from the Common Lectionary, usually the Psalm , each week. During certain times of the year Ron preaches from the Lectionary texts, and we base our worship around those text(s).
In response to some suggestions made by members, some of the changes we have made in the service during this year are to shorten it by asking deacons and worship leaders to be ready to lead immediately after the hymns, by reducing the number of musical selections, by Ron shortening his sermons, and by streamlining the congregational readings and prayers. We will be experimenting with various changes in the service from time to time, but we are committed to think of worship, as theologian David Buttrick has said, as both "Home" and "Journey." If you have suggestions, please see one of us. We appreciate your input and want to make our worship services as worshipful and as meaningful as possible for the congregation.

Piano Given in Memory of Dale Aldridge
A new Yamaha studio piano has been donated to Crescent Hill for the Fellowship Hall in memory of Dale Aldridge by his wife Nita and daughters Linda Stroupe, Judy Fehr, Joy Henry and Patti Aldridge. Dale was such an integral part of Wednesday nights in Fellowship Hall for many years, and it is very appropriate that a piano be given that will honor his memory. Thanks to Nita and family for this generous expression of love. [from Spirit, Mar 16, 1998]
Reformation Sunday is celebrated in remembrance of Martin Luther's posting of 95 theses on the Castle church door in Wittenberg on October 31, 1517. Luther's doctrine was justification by faith alone and direct communion with God, with an emphasis on each individual's reading and interpretation of God's word. Congregational singing was restored after a silence of almost 1,200 years. Luther is quoted as saying: "Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise."
